4 Winter Plumbing Problems Dallas Doesn’t Have

Remember to pack close-toed shoes and a jacket if you head up north to visit family and friends this year. You can also be comforted in your travels this year knowing your Dallas pipes will still be running when you come home.

The holiday season usually means cold weather and a risk of freezing pipes, but in Dallas temperatures below 50 degrees are extremely rare. Lucky Dallasians have the advantage of watching most of the country freeze under a blanket of snow and ice from the comfort of their warm and sunny homes.

That doesn’t mean that Dallas gets to avoid plumbing problems all together, but here are 4 winter plumbing issues that Dallas doesn’t have to worry about.
Frozen pipes — When temperatures dip below freezing, pipes are susceptible to freezing and bursting. High water pressure combined with ice temperatures is a recipe for disaster. When the pipes are frozen, the water can’t get through and the ice causes the pipes to expand and burst. To avoid a catastrophe, it’s recommended that the water be left on a slow drip, adding a bit to the water bill.

Failing hot water systems — One of the most common issues for plumbing in cold weather is lack of hot water due to the cold weather pushing the water heater to its limit. While the people of Dallas are happily taking hot showers and soaking in the tub, the frozen parts of the country are shivering in lukewarm water and trying to wash their hair as fast as they can.

Clogged drains due to snow –While everyone’s pipes are susceptible to a clogged drain, only in freezing temperatures does snow become a danger to a home’s drainage system. Snow and ice surrounding a sump-pump discharge line can cause water to back-up and freeze. Again, this is not a problem for the good people of the sunny and warm state of Dallas.

Outdoor leaks and breaks — A frozen garden hose can cause severe damage to a home. Ice will cause pressure to build up in a house’s water lines when a garden hose is left connected during a freeze. Another issue can be caused by uninsulated outdoor faucets leading to frozen water lines as well.

While the frozen parts of the country are complaining about wintery weather and worrying about how to keep their pipes from icing over, Dallas folks get to put on a sweater in the morning and enjoy the warmth of sunshine by the afternoon. Snuggle under a warm blanket to get through those 50 degree mornings and enjoy the peaceful plumbing that warm air brings.

Though the humidity can make the air feel a bit cool and chilly in the winter, the lucky people of Dallas don’t have to worry about frozen plumbing. Since frozen pipes are crossed off our list of worries, you can focus on water conservation and garnering the power of solar energy.
